Toyota Motor Sales USA has announced that it will offer an all-new, fuel-efficient 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine in its 2009 Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle.
Toyota claimed that, when the 2009 Highlander arrives at dealerships in mid-to-late January 2009, the new powerplant will be among the best mid-size sport utility vehicles (SUV) in the areas of performance, fuel economy and value.
The new 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine will generate 187HP at 5,800rpm and 186lbft of torque at 4,100rpm on regular 87 octane fuel. A dual exhaust manifold will help maximize its power output. The Highlander, equipped with the new four-cylinder, will be Environmental Protection Agency-rated as an ultra low emission vehicle.
The new four-cylinder engine will be mated to an all-new six-speed electronically-controlled automatic overdrive transmission with intelligence.
Toyota said that the new transmission will help deliver quiet and smooth performance on par with a V6 and acceleration that is quick for a four-cylinder unit. When equipped with a tow package, the new powerplant is expected to achieve a maximum towing capacity of 3,500lbs.
