LEXUS LS460 - 2007 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR

Abstract: At a press conference presented by the MIDWAY GROUP and hosted by the New York International Auto Show at the Jacob Javitz Centre in Manhattan, New York, the Lexus LS 460 was declared the 2007 World Car of the Year.

The Lexus LS460 was chosen from an initial entry list of twenty-eight (28) contenders nominated by World Car jurors from 22 countries throughout the world.

Rather than being just a popularity contest, the objective was to ensure that the World Car of the Year would be the product of a fair and thorough assessment process that considered the needs and wants of consumers the world over. The process began with individual jurors evaluating and rating the candidates using a variety of standardized parameters – everything from styling and quality, to performance and safety. The jurors then voted in January 2007 in order to establish a top ten shortlist. The World Car of the Year was chosen from those finalists as tabulated by the international accounting firm KPMG.

WCOTY jurors considered the prestigious LS 460 to be the embodiment of the Lexus brand's "pursuit of perfection." Still new in some markets, Lexus continues to build its resume with this luxury flagship boasting many firsts, including a novel automatic parking system and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Classically luxurious, with modern execution, unquestioned quality, and more than ample power it also offers a green alternative in the form of the LS 600h hybrid variant for those who seek guilt-free indulgence.

The top three contenders for the third annual World Car of the Year in addition to the Lexus LS460 were the Audi TT and the MINI.

Introduction

The LS 460 is Lexus’ flagship luxury sedan, first introduced as the LS 400 when the Lexus line was launched by Toyota in 1990. The third-generation LS 430 debuted as a 2001 model with new safety technology, improved performance, and one of the first gas-powered V8 engines to receive Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle certification. The 2007 LS 460 is all new for 2007 replacing the LS 430. The fourth-generation LS is built on a sophisticated platform that maintains a delicate balance between ride comfort and responsive handling. A first-ever long-wheelbase model called the LS 460 L is available featuring 4.8 inches of additional space and a host of standard features.

New for 2007 Lexus LS460

The 2007 LS 460 is powered by an all-new 4.6-liter V8 engine that’s mated to the world’s first eight-speed automatic transmission. With an output of 380 horsepower and 367 lb-ft of torque, the LS 460 can go 0 to 60 mph in less than 5.5 seconds. Styled with a low front grille, deep drawn fenders and projector-type xenon headlights, the LS 460 is redesigned with a multilink suspension system that includes an electronic power steering system and a next-generation Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system. Standard features for the LS 460 and LS 460 L include SmartAccess keyless entry with push-button start/stop, an electronic parking brake, a 10-speaker Lexus Premium Audio system and 18-inch nine-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. The LS 460 L adds 4.8 inches of additional space and a number of standard equipment including climate-controlled front seats, heated rear seats, a new heated steering wheel, power rear sunshade, a new one touch open/close power trunk, headlight washers and laminated side glass. Eight airbags are standard with a potential of ten airbags with option packages.
